What Is a Busbar?

Busbar is a conductive metal bar or strip inside an electrical panel that distributes power to connected circuits. It provides a common connection point for circuit breakers and carries current across the panel. Insulating supports, barriers, and panel design keep the busbar separated from grounded or neutral components where required.

Key Takeaways About Busbar

  • A busbar is a solid conductor, not an individual branch-circuit wire.
  • Breaker connections depend on the busbar’s layout and condition.
  • A busbar is not the same as a neutral or grounding bar.

How Busbar Works

Busbar carries electrical current along a metal conductor inside a panel. Circuit breakers attach to designated contact points, allowing each connected branch circuit to receive power from the panel’s supply. The bar’s shape and position depend on the panel design.

A circuit breaker must make a firm electrical connection with the correct busbar contact. Heat marks, corrosion, looseness, or damage can interfere with that connection and may affect panel performance. A busbar can also be paired with separate neutral and grounding bars, which serve different electrical paths. Panel work requires identifying each bar correctly before connections are inspected or repaired.

From the San Bernardino Electrician team

When we inspect a busbar during panel repair, we look for discoloration, heat damage, corrosion, and loose breaker contact points. We also verify that breakers sit in the positions intended for that panel design. Our team checks the related neutral and grounding bars separately because each serves a different electrical function.

Busbar in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner reports repeated breaker problems in a panel. During a panel repair assessment, the busbar contact area may be checked for heat damage or poor connection where the breaker mounts.
