What Is a Tamper-Resistant Outlet?

A tamper-resistant outlet is an electrical receptacle with internal shutters that block access to its energized contacts unless a matching plug enters both slots at once. The shutters help prevent accidental insertion of objects into the outlet openings. Tamper-resistant outlets serve as a protective receptacle choice in homes, workplaces, and other occupied spaces.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Outlet

  • Internal shutters distinguish this receptacle from a standard outlet.
  • The outlet accepts normal plugs without a separate cover.
  • Tamper resistance does not mean ground-fault protection.

How Tamper-Resistant Outlet Works

A tamper-resistant outlet uses spring-loaded shutters behind its contact openings. Both shutters move only when the blades of a matching plug apply pressure at the same time. An object inserted into one opening normally cannot move a single shutter far enough to reach an energized contact.

The shutter mechanism does not control fault current or detect leakage. A ground-fault circuit interrupter serves that separate function by disconnecting power when it senses an imbalance. During outlet repair, the receptacle type, wiring connections, grounding path, and device operation are checked together so the replacement matches the circuit and the intended use.

From the San Bernardino Electrician team

When we handle Outlet Repair, we check whether the existing receptacle is tamper-resistant and inspect its wiring connections. We also test the outlet's operation and confirm that the replacement fits the box, conductors, and circuit protection.

Tamper-Resistant Outlet in Practice: A Real-World Example

A household outlet near a living area may be replaced with a tamper-resistant outlet during Outlet Repair. Normal plugs can still operate the connected lamp or charger, while the internal shutters restrict access through the openings.
